Help Invalid Recipient text meagre error

I know there are a few posts with a similar problem, i.e., contacts imported from another phone are not formatted properly for text messing.

My problem is that I get the "invalid recipient" message even if I enter a new, ten digit phone number directly into the the "to" field of the native messing app, without spaces, dashed or parentheses. The phone automatically formats a ten digit number like this (xxx) xxx-xxxx

I'm using the Huawei P9 with Android Marshmallow.

I get the same exact crap from Android. I never had this problem with Apple or even worthless HTC from Windows. I can go to "contact" list, click on the "text message" icon there, and it works fine.

When I try to do a normal text, select a name from the contact list, it immediately says "invalid recipient". My carrier (AT&T) says this is not their problem but an Android issue. Okay, Androids, what's the fix???

As you might guess, the overwhelming majority of people have never encountered this problem, so it would help if you could give us more information. At least what phone, what OS version, what message app (I assume the default one), some contacts or all, what happens if you enter the number manually, and whether you have any other problems.

(it's not unknown for carriers to pass the buck btw, so I'd not assume it's nothing to do with them just yet).
