IoT WiFi could become 10,000 times more energy efficient thanks to University of Washington research

A team of researchers from the University of Washington have come up with what they are calling Passive WiFi.

They'll be presenting their findings at the upcoming USENIX Symposium on Networked Systems Design and Implementation in March, but the result could produce a way for IoT devices to transmit data via WiFi(instead of Bluetooth) and use 10,000 times less power than before.
