IR Blaster

Welcome to the forums!!!:D

Kit kat is supporting it so the s4 and htc one play editions and/or custom ROMs will work.

As far as the n5 not having it, I'd personally rather have the cheaper price tag than more hardware for a feature that I may not use.

I have an S3 with a cracked screen so I was waiting out the launch of Nexus 5 to purchase a new phone, just wish it had that functionality as it is something I would utilize.

Thanks for the welcome.

This is the one feature (aside from an impossibly large battery) that I really wish it had. I would rather use the IR blaster on a phone than pony up for an expensive universal remote.

With the 4.4 API natively supporting IR Blaster I am going to try and make a universal remote if it doesn't have it I will just have to borrow a friends S4, it would be nice if CNET was right however

I wonder if you can (will be able to) get cases with build in IR blasters. The hardware is pretty tiny so you should be able to fit it into a slim case and then just have a USB pass through on the bottom.

That's a good idea, not sure what the market would be for that however. It would be nice for personal use to hack one together.

There's always RedEye Mini. I never liked it though because it stuck out too much, and looked like a aerial on an old Siemens phone. Plus it might be iPhone only.

"Dear RedEye customers:
It is with heavy heart that I write to inform you that ThinkFlood is closing its doors. "

Well that's out lol:D they did have it for android however.

Is anyone else upset that the Nexus 5 does not come with an IR blaster since KitKat is now supporting it in the API?

Would it have been cool? Yes. Upset? Not even the slightest. My Note 3, HTC One, & used to have S4 all have that feature. It's a lot slower to use then your remote. Comes in handy when you wanna play with people's minds or cannot find the remote, or to far from it. In permanent use of replacing your remote is a no-no. You have to turn the screen on, go to the app, or pull it down from the shade, and if you pull it down from the shade you only have options to turn it off or on, volume, and up and down channel. You have to enter the app to actually type in specific number of the channel. A real remote you simply pickup and press buttons. A lot less steps. Plus the guide they provide on the phone is for your fav TV shows and not the entire guide itself. It can come in handy but it's not replacing it at all. This is how I see it.

Now after all that said Google could have made it work a lot simpler or better under their own design of course, but I imagine it would have worked the same pretty much as HTC's and Samsung's.

I would like to have something to replace my old and not really configurable Logitech 1100 with the advent of IR Blaster API in the latest kit kat I can start working on an application to do just this. Looks like I need to get a Nexus 7 to test on, I believe that device does have an IR Blaster on it if the Nexus 5 turns out to not have it.

Neither one of those have an IR blaster on it..

Why not get the Logitech Hub that allows you to control all of your devices that might be stored away in a closet or something. I think that is better functionality than having an IR blaster.

Harmony Ultimate Hub

I do not have personal experience with it however because I also think that controlling a television or any device from a smartphone was just a little slow in response time for me. I just us a Logitech Harmony remote.
