Is 14 year old babysitting.. cruel?

If the 14 year old is responsible I dont see the problem and knows how to take care of a kid that young. Here in the states for many years young girls babysat kids for spending money and they ranged from 12 to 16. Its not the age but maturity level and responsibility.

But can having a 14 year old babysit a 3 year old be considered "cruel"?

I mean, regardless of maturity level... how does that work out to be cruelty to children?

No as the saying goes no harm, no foul. I dont know english law. Is there a law stating you cant do this period?

This is messed up and a somewhat confusing article. It says there are no guidelines about how old a kid has to be to leave home alone, or watching a younger kid, but authorities can take action if they feel its needed. But they also say in this specific case, there was no incident. So, what happened? Seems to also have screwed up this lady's career.

You English are weird sometimes.

I remember reading a few years back in england the police took a kid from his parents for being to over weight. so they said they was endangering the kid. seems like the cops can do as they see fit and not what the law sees fit.

I may not agree with you on many things but this I agree with you 100% on this.

if its true, its plain stupid

BTW, look at the newspaper.. tabloid crud
headline:
PLAN TO RIG YOUR EU VOTE

LOLz
Like I am suppose to know British scandal sheets are compared to the REal news. Wait I thought all British news was scandal papers. :p

Oh it's nanny state UK gone mad again. I'm surprised they didn't prosecute the mum for not having him CRB checked.

When I was 11-15, I regularly used to babysit(maybe it was the other way round?) my younger sister when the parents where working.

I have no problem with it. It all depends on the maturity level of the kid, and needs of the three year old. At any rate, this is not at all cruelty to the 14 year old. Some people in the West have no idea what cruelty actually is, or how had the rest of the world struggles just to stay alive another day.

Friggin nanny state. What business does the government have in this matter? The government has to approve babysitters now? It bothers me that the police even knew about this, considering there was no incident.

BTW - if this is just tabloid junk - the story exists because this type of thing does actuallly happen in the UK.

This, IM(not so)HO, is the natural progression of a Nanny State (Not this specific incident, but incidents of this nature). When you aren't fit to determine how best to keep yourself safe, you aren't fit to determine who can watch your kids either...

I don't know that I would call it cruel, but I don't see it as any different than child labor, which I am sure is not legal.

who is the suposed victum? Id say either way there would have to be an act of cruelty involved

In my opinion, that's akin to saying that chores are child labor.

Eh, yes and no. Depends on what the chorse are. If it's cleaning up after his/herself at the dinner table and such that's one thing. Different familes have different definitions of chores though (my friend's family had him do virtually all the housework, including repainting the interiors). I do see where you are coming from.

How old is the child being watched? What if there is a burglary or emergency? Who is responsible then (legally)?

Well think of this: It is literally harder (and often more expensive) to adopt a child than to create one of your own. Prospective adoptive parents are scrutinized incredibly heavily before being allowed to adopt. Any kid past puberty can crank out a baby without the government caring one bit.
