Is an SD Card a necessity to root your phone?

Ive had my Sprint HTC Hero for a couple months now been debating on rooting it but have questions. 1. Do i absolutely need an SD Card? 2. Is rooting safe? 3. It says I have 2 gb already on my sd card but ive never purchased or installed one. Any tips, suggestions, or advice would be greatly appreciated.
 
Think you'll find that your Hero came with a 2GB microSD card already installed and ready to use. If you pop the back off the card can be accessed on one side of the phone (I forget which side - sold mine) where it can be popped out and replaced.
