Is android able to completely disables data

I have an app on my current WinMo phone that completely disables data, but not phone signals or SMS (MMS won't work - requires data). Is there anything like this for the Android system? Or is the "data" required for even basic phone signals and SMS texting?

Hi Ed, welcome to Android Forums :) Yes you can disable 3G and only use 2G on any Android phone, it's in the phone's main setting. I had my Nexus One on 2G for half a year before I got data.

As far as I understand, 2G is still data -- just slower -- and you'll be charged for its use just the same. To completely disable data, go to Settings > Wireless and Networks > Mobile networks. Uncheck "Data enabled" and you're good to go.

I have an N1 and no data plan, just voice and text (SMS). I have it disabled and it get phone calls & texts just fine. I just go to starbucks & second cup whenever I need internet. :)
