I have an app on my current WinMo phone that completely disables data, but not phone signals or SMS (MMS won't work - requires data). Is there anything like this for the Android system? Or is the "data" required for even basic phone signals and SMS texting?
Hi Ed, welcome to Android Forums Yes you can disable 3G and only use 2G on any Android phone, it's in the phone's main setting. I had my Nexus One on 2G for half a year before I got data.
As far as I understand, 2G is still data -- just slower -- and you'll be charged for its use just the same. To completely disable data, go to Settings > Wireless and Networks > Mobile networks. Uncheck "Data enabled" and you're good to go.
I have an N1 and no data plan, just voice and text (SMS). I have it disabled and it get phone calls & texts just fine. I just go to starbucks & second cup whenever I need internet.
