Is Android/Google/OPO putting music on my phone?

(I have a OnePlus 3) This is about the 5th time I have found a folder for an artist on my phone of which I know for a fact I did not add that. How do I know? Well, 1) Because I don't own it and 2) It's been of a genre I don't listen to (like Country).

I am using Google's Play Music and "YES" I have the selection of "Downloaded Only" uh... selected. Which I get the wording there, if the song is downloaded onto my phone without my consent, it's still downloaded only. Anyways, where are these songs coming from? Has anyone run into this? This is frustrating because I am essentially having music advertised to me because it's amazing how frequently Shuffle is playing the songs I don't actually own but are somehow on my phone. Also, how are they getting on my phone? Data or WiFi? Is this OnePlus doing this or is this Android/Google doing this?

Any help here would be hot.
 
It's not Android doing this. It's one of your apps, one way or another.

Whether that's a OnePlus app, whether it's something you've not spotted in Play Music, or some other app, or some website you've visited, or what I cannot say. But it's not something I've heard of before myself. I assume that you are not seeing download notifications, because if you were those might provide some clues.
 
I have had some weird issues with apps turning on and running when various apps (not at all related to them) are being updated. Like Sirius XM will turn on and start playing while Facebook Messenger is being updated.

But when it comes to fishy apps, I'm very good about steering clear of anything that gives any amount of fishy smell. And no, I have not seen any download notifications.

I'm leaning towards it being Google Play Music being the culprit. It's very random that the first song of a shuffle will be a song I don't actually own.
 
I have some "free" albums sitting in my account on Google for about 8 years. They appeared when I first started the account. I don't want them, never touched them and can't delete them. I ignore them.

I have a couple of books sitting in Google Books in the same manner. What irks me is that anything like this can be falsely counted in a survey of what's popular or biggest selling under false pretences.

I will not buy anything but apps from Google. I prefer to support independent book and music sellers.

I use the Play Music app quite often and haven't seen what you're describing either.

If you go into your Settings >> Data usage menu, is there any app or service there that's listed as drawing down a lot of extraneous data?
Also, if you still suspect the Play Music app as the problem, if you go into Settings >> Apps and select the Google Play Music app, you can check on it's data usage from there and you can enable 'Unrestricted data usage'.

I meant to say "suspicious," not "random."

I have looked into it. I guess I shouldn't say it's very frequent because it's not. But I have noticed it enough times that I'm confused what's going on. Cuz like I've said, there's even a folder for the artist who I know I don't own or like. So it's possible it's just a WiFi thing and I'll never see it in the data usage. Or do phones also keep track of data on WiFi?

There should be an arrow to the right of the date in that 'Wi-Fi data usage' page, tap on that arrow to see a drop-down menu that lists previous, back-dated time periods.
