Help Is FoxFi truly working with S5 VZW?

So following the resurrection of FoxFi and its ability to now work on the Galaxy S5 Verizon version running KK, I have it installed and running on my phone.

I have been using it for the past several days and I have definite concerns about the way that it is supposedly configured to operate.

I have a 10GB shared family plan. After only a day or two of using FoxFi (and I know it's on because the icons show that they are working), I have already hit almost 1GB of data usage, and that is according to Verizon's website, not my device, although the device reflects it, as well.

I carefully followed all of the instructions, however there seems no way to have FF run without also activating the internal program. Has anyone else had a different experience with this or a recommendation? As soon as another root recovery is available for the recent update for the S5, I will head back in that direction, but in the interim, I have to rely upon FF to do what it is intended to do.

Feedback is greatly appreciated.

" I think you have" a misunderstanding about what FoxFi does.

1st, it does use your carrier's data as its' source.

2nd, what it does is get around your carrier's refusal to allow you to hotspot a WiFi router off of your phone w/o having to pay them for that feature. Verizon does not allow us to turn on the Hotspot WiFi unless we pay them an additional $40/month.

Bastards..... it is the same data that is being used, and because we want to use a PC thru the phone's data plan they want to charge us for it?

FoxFi does work as you have already seen. But, it comes with a price, and that price is that you WILL USE DATA from your carrier.

How else would you get internet if you do not have a local WiFi source to get it from?

Sorry, but yours is working just fine. just be frugal with your PC. You cannot just blithely go surfing, watch videos, YouTube, etc without burning up a lot of gBytes.

Save that kind of use for when you are home, not on the road.

Thank you for the clarification. I think that part of what was confusing me is the fact that due to a lot of plan and device changes that I recently made, I went from an unlimited data plan to the 10GB family plan.

Previously, I seldom looked at the data usage, but when I did, it only seemed like maybe 2GB at most for me and the same for my wife. Now we're sharing and burning through the plan, doesn't make any sense.

With respect to usage, we are traveling but both using our devices for business, so if we have to use it, then that's what we must do.

Thanks again for clearing things up.

Like you, I had a grandfathered Unlimited Data plan for years.
That was Before Smart Phones and in 10 years I never exceeded about 300 kBytes.

Well, I bought the Galaxy S.... kept the plan, it was nice, no worries, just use it.
but, that phone was not a surfer's delight and I never exceeded about 1.2 gB in the 3 years I used it.

Then along came my daughter who finally admitted that all of her friends had abandoned her on emails, texting, etc..... they went Facebook

You guessed it, now she needs a Smart Phone.... She went with the Windows Phone because "it is purty"... I suppose that is as good a reason to buy a phone as any other.... but it needs the internet.....

Keeping my unlimited plan was expensive as you well know, and adding her on for another $75 pop was more than my pocket book can handle.... I'm 4 years past retirement and the $$$ are not all that plentiful.... Since our daughter lives with us and helps make our home much easier to live in, we subsidize her phone.

I agonized for a month on which way to go, and finally while talking to the VZW representative who was very helpful, she went back and looked at my internet history..... Unlimited was not what I really needed "then", but I could sure use it now.

Anyway, we now have a 5 gB Family plan and wonder of wonders, we have not exceeded about 3 gBytes for the last year. It is working for us, and it does save me a few bucks.

VZW quit sweating about my potential for burning through 1.2 trillion bytes per month ha ha ha ha

Well I spoke with Verizon about it today. 1st of all, they are running some form of an unannounced promo giving me an additional 1GB per month free for the next 12 months, on top of the 10GB plan. Wow, something for nothing and I said "sign me up"! 2nd, I will just have to monitor the burn rate for now. Highly unlikely that we will exceed 11GB, but if I get close, then there is always the 2GB/$10 incremental deal, which can be added on a month to month if need be.

Glad that I no longer have to pay for my kid's phone.
