In my job I come up against a lot of technical problems and challenges.
It got me thinking, is it possible to improve your problem solving skills? What do you think makes a good problem solver? In my domain, technical knowledge is key, but also trying to think around the problem, come up with alternate approaches. Sometimes it's tricky, especially if you're working in a area you have less
familiarity with.

So do you think it's possible to become better at problem solving, or is it just a natural ability, like intelligence level?
Or is it a skill you can improve? If so, how?

It is possible to become a better problem solver. Intellectual development continues all through your life, just stay focus on getting there. It hasn't got anything to do with natural ability, just stay focus on getting there and don't give up.

I would think like with all skill sets they can always be honed to a finer edge. Knowledge being the base and reasoning, a high level of patience, and an unwavering determination to solve a problem being the tools of the trade. Working knowledge is the only tool I see that might be sharpened.

problem solving is a skill you have to be borne with.
some people are stronger in it than others.

i think it can be sharpened.

by being more knowledgeable in the areas... more areas.
reading more.. stories and mysteries and how they were solved
playing brain teasers... puzzles... things that make you look outside the box.
and of course your listening skills... before you can solve a problem.. you got to understand the full problem and what is the outcome wanted.

Yes and yes.

The best problem solvers I know are those who understand the situation and can interpolate the variables to produce a different, more desirable outcome. More importantly, they are those who enjoy a challenge and are driven to prove themselves capable. You can increase knowledge and provide more experience, but I don't think you can train the desire to solve into someone.

yeah.. that is why is said..
you are born with the skill...
some have higher skill than others.

those who have it.. can enhance or sharpen this skill..

NOT everyone has his skill...
not everyone can be trained or learn more new tricks.
