Is it Time to Upgrade???

I have a Metro PCS/CDMA Samsung Galaxy S3.
Is it time to upgrade due to the merger?
Are CDMA phones becoming a thing of the past?
If I make a claim will Metro Guard replace with CDMA or GSM SGS3?

Basically everything except LTE will be a thing of the past around 2020 but that'll be way after the mid 2015 CDMA shutdown date
Pretty sure they'll send you a CDMA S3 as they're even still sending out indulges instead of sending a newer phone

I sold mine last week through amazon. The price of this model is dropping fast. Metro is not selling it anywhere anymore and people are dropping it like it is hot. You have two options either sell now and recoup some of your losses or keep it for another year until metro shuts down its cdma network. Either way we got ****** when the merger happened. I bought that cell phone for $500 dollars last year. A year later i sold it for $340. That is a pretty tough discount for a phone that was in perfectly good order and that i liked a lot. But i had to do it. That phone was going to become a paper weight next year.

There is metro for you. Their customer service is awful. I actually considered exchanging mine because it was still under the one year warranty. But i was afraid something like that would happen. They would charge me $15 dollars and give an old used CDMA S3.

Nother question....
I pay insurance on this CDMA SGS3, so I am assuming that I should stop insurance because they would replace with another CDMA and I pay $129 deductible for something that wont work later.

I dont know for sure. I heard of people that have gotten the CDMA version and people who gotten the GSM.

Either way it is not worth it if you have to pay $129 dollars. That insurance is a rip off! My recommendation is sell yours on amazon or ebay between $300-350. That money +$129 you would spend on the insurance almost gets you a NEW GSM galaxy S4.

I'm in the same boat with my CDMA S3, and I keep wondering if it's time. Yes, eventually, these phones will be out of date, but every phone eventually is. It's 2013, almost 2014, but 2015 is a ways away. If you want to sell it big, sell it now, and buy a new one for the meanwhile. Otherwise, hold on to it. Get a better phone later, cause an S4 by 2015 might not be the same price it is right now. Just my two cents.

I agree. I have to say that at least here in Miami i am getting better reception and much better data speeds from the GSM phone. That is another reason you might consider changing.

um yeah you can still use the phone after the merger is all said ans done fully. You just wont have the cdma to fall back on. You will still be able to use the LTE for data and because they are still going to deploy the VOLTE for calls so don't panic.

The LTE maybe but Volte I'm not sure. If that were the case why are they changing all of the phones in the store to GSM?

i would figure because tmobile runs off of GSM as their fall back network. They are shutting down CDMA which is why they will no longer be selling those phone. The CDMA part will bee obsolete technology son atleast where metro and tmobile are standing. You need to have a back up for areas that wont have LTE for there coverage. I was simply saying that the phone should still work after the 2015 shut down if not it will work up until then to say the least so that gives us what another year to maybe two years i mean in all honesty these things never happen exsactly when they say and im sure in that time frame every one would have gotten pleanty of use out of their CDMA phones hell most people i know thee days dont even keep phones for that long to begin with. So try and put a little aside every so often and by the time it happens you can get the S6 or S7 or what ever model is out then.

Please provide back up for what you say here.

I have paid close attention sense the merger started.

I have seen Not One Single Word from Metro or T-Mo as to what they will have Other Than GSM support after they "turn CDMA off". So far as I know, EVERYONE who Thinks they know what a Metro CDMA phone will or won't do after Metro turns it off is only making a GUESS.

Metro LTE so far as I can see is Still CDMA that I think Goes Away with CDMA.

Well I guess im going by some rumors that have been posted on a few posts on these boards b some people whos info I trust. But just as my second post says we are sill looking at over a year for this to happen do you really think that its time to start panicing already I highly doubt January 1st 2015 they are just going to flip a switch and bye bye CDMA

By that time just about everybody will have switched their cdma phones. Think about it just about everyone changes their phone every couple of years. They will probably offer a promotion and offer a couple of phones for dirt cheap prices. Over 90% percent of the people will have switched to gsm by the time the switch actually happens.

yeah I know i pretty much said that earlier.

That means they will probably force people to use a gsm phone and turn the whole cdma network down. They will probably give them fair warning a couple months in advance just like t mobile is doing now with their plans. They are telling everyone with old plans that they have to switch to the new simple choice plan.

I switched from the s3 to s4 for a month now. Night & day is the difference. Speed & signal strength have more than doubled. So yeah, I push gsm phones to my friends or anyone else when I hear talk about what to buy.

I was simply trying to not cause an unneeded panic iceberg situation in all honesty nobody 100% knows it's all guesses at this point. But I'm sure with T-Mobile's back and all VOLTE is likely to happen either way switch now or wait you have some time still. Don't stress so much about it right now. If your phone is good enough now it will be good enough in a few months. I don't know about everyone else I don't buy my tech with resale value in mind I buy with will I enjoy this while I have it and is it worth the price I'm about to pay in mind.

Metro LTE is LTE then CDMA is 1x and Evdo

Look in the Dallas speed test thread, the post that was posted yesterday is his phone running on the combined metro and tmobile LTE network that was established within the week

There was all kinds of rumors metro cdma was going to eventually use tmob towers..i still dont think that has happend..and if it has i assumed it was going to happen everywhere..but i think it only happend in las vegas of im not mistaken..

From the merger announcement and first presentation it's been shutdown CDMA at the end of Q2 2015 and combine metro and tmobile LTE into one LTE network but still broadcast metro and tmobile id's and also maintain all VoLTE progress metro had built out so far

my logic on it is based on their push for VoLTE overall, the connect 4g was the first VoLTE device out, then they had required updates for several older phones. as well as using joyn and tmobiles wifi calling i could see them increasing their VoLTE foothold as it is the way all carriers are aiming to go. this is a theory though and they could just shut it all down and offer trade in like program etc.

Call it whatever you want to call it.

I am simply saving that it is my opinion only that when Metro turns off CDMA (and I'd say 1st quarter of 2015 for that) EVEN IF you have a CDMA LTE phone now it's going to be a paperweight.

I have heard nor seen Nothing other than other's personal opinions that's NOT the case.
