Help is my s3 defective?

I got my galaxy s3 a week ago. So far I love the phone, but there are a few things that have me worried. My battery life isn't the best. I lose up to 10% an hour with moderate use and 3 to 4% when on stand by. Once in a while my phone randomly shuts off and I have to power it on again but it's been getting better with that and hasn't been happening much. Is it a defective battery or phone? I called Verizon and they sent me another free battery to try out to see if that makes a difference. Is it a glitch in the software than can be fixed with a a software update? I currently have 4.0.4.

battery will always vary based on user. your battery may last longer or shorter than mine based on many things such as,
1. how we use our phone
2. what apps we have
3. you spend most of your time in areas where cell reception is bad
4. wifi network drops frequently
5. LTE is a big battery drain if your surfing the web lots

etc...

everyone will have their own experiences with what "moderate" use is.
But I can say that you should be getting no less than 2.5 hours of on screen time with a full charge. even some games, I was able to play for 2.5 hours.

with your phone shutting off like that, it shouldn't happen. if it keeps doing that, I think it's an issue with the phone. might want to get it replaced.

Def go for getting the phone totally replaced. Thats not normal to lose 3-4% on standby.
