Is root worth it?

El Presidente

Beware The Milky Pirate!
Mine arrived today! :D

I had visitors before work so I wasn't able to set it up, but before I do, is rooting worth it? A quick check of the serial shows I have a rootable model, but in order to do so, I know you're not supposed to update beforehand.

From some brief investigations, it looks like fling/vlc needs root? Can anyone confirm?

If yes, is plex a viable alternative?

Sorry if the info already exists in this section, I'm mobile with a diabolical connection at the moment so searching was useless. :o

No problem. :)

I couldn't wait so set it up and updated to non rootable FW.

Even if you need root for fling (my main concern), plex is doing pretty much all I need it to for local media. I'd have liked to have been able to mess with DNS Settings so US Netflix would work, but it's not a deal breaker.

Have you rooted yours?

Nope. :) :p

I understand that with the right router, you can change the dns mapping by setting up an explicit routing table.

Pretty cool dude put up a FAQ at XDA today, he may have the trick linked there.

I just bought a new one. How can you tell if you have a rootable version before booting it up?

If it was new, unopened and never set up, check what the serial number is -

Beginning with 3921 and maybe some in the 3922 range.

Only build 12072 can be rooted so far as I know.
