Is SMS Backup Safe?

I wanted to backup my SMS, I found a free app on the Market, SMS Backup and SMS BACKUP+, I tried both and they ask you for your Google login details, it is safe? I'm afraid that my email will be compromised in the future. Thanks

look for one called sms backup n2manager. it just creates a log on your phone, doesn't request google info either.

I did this yesterday and wondered the same. I logged in with it, but It never found anything to back up. I removed it and changed password.

I have been clueless about this topic forever now. I'm not bashing anyone, just would love to know the reason behind backing up your texts....? I have never ever had the need to back up a text, if theres some integral info in a text, i copy it to Catch or something. Please enlighten me.

Some people do for sentimental reasons. It does come in handy if your flashing a new ROM and you want to move all your conversations from your current ROM to a new ROM. Same applies to switching between Android phones.

Its not really necessary though. I all my SMS messages disappeared I would probably not miss them, unless I was in the middle of a conversation.

I'll be updating my phone's firmware that's why I have to do a quick backup and restore. Sounds like we can't really say that it's a safe app. Will have to change password shortly.. Thanks

If you have to change a ROM can you restore from this?

Also, to answer the question asked earlier: I backed my SMS up to Gmail because I may have to take someone to small claims court & the conversations that took place via SMS are very enlightening to an outside party looking in. It's easier to forward them all via email or print from a PC. Just gives more options for dealing w/info for whatever reason you may have. Up until now I never saw a need to back them up either. When you have a need though you'll be happy the option exists.

Agreed. Some of my text are for business and sometimes I need to refer back to them.:) I use SMS Backup & Restore.

hi, i'm the author of sms backup+.

sms backup+ doesn't get your password, it only obtains a token to get access to your emails. you can revoke access any given time without changing your password (in fact, changing your password won't prevent it from accessing the emails - the token is still valid).

see Revoke third-party access to your account information : Privacy Concerns - Accounts Help

it's good that your are suspicious - a program asking for access to email has to be trusted. in case of sms backup+ this is relatively straightforward - it's developed as an open source project, a lot of people have already inspected the source code (and even contributed patches and new features to it).

let me know if you have any more questions.
