Is Sprint Mobile Hotspot free?

I was just wondering if using my Epic as a Wifi Hotspot was free or do I have to sign up for something from Sprint first? When I go into my account and see what services I can add to my plan, Mobile Hotspot isn't an option. But there is an icon on my phone for it and it lets me turn it on and off.

Nope. To use the hotspot feature from sprint is a 30.00 charge. On any carrier actually. Hence why some of us root. Wireless tethering is nice!

Can I root and still receive official OTA updates from Sprint? I am still running 2.1 and am afraid to try out a custom ROM in fear of bricking my Phone. I don't have $499 to buy a new one if it happens.

No. When they send out ota's, they are made to recognize certain files to know that your phone is still stock, thus ota applicable. But rooting these phones is rather easy if you take the time to read and research carefully. And again (as a disclaimer like you will find on any and all topics where rooting is concerned) you are doing so at your own risk.

first.. you should do a lot more research in rooting and such. there is a lot of info here. and will answer most of your questions.

Most OTA will cancel your root and/or block current root methods. 99.999% of all updates can be found a few hours later on XDA forums or here.

there is a small chance of really "breaking" your phone.
99% of all issues.. you can get back to working from.

of the real breaks/bricking that are permanent... are so bad.. that sprint can not see know what you are doing. 99% of the time you can get it warranted... unless you tell them the truth on how it got that way.

comparing $30 x 24 months = $720.
or
get $7/ month warranty on the phone + $100deductible. cancel when you think you have it figured out.
or
buy another one on craiglist/ebay

Rooting voids warranty, but I doubt it voids your contract. Sprint cannot void your contract for rooting. They CAN void your contract if they find out you are using wireless tethering. By the way, you do not need to root your phone to use a widget to activate mobile hotspot.

I just don't really have a reason to use wifi hotspot, so I don't. When I need to use a computer, I'm always somewhere where I have an Internet connection. Where I don't, I really can do whatever I need to on my phone.

I've done the root on a couple of different devices, and I had never done it before. The first time was with an evo, and I just googled it and followed the steps all along the way. They had just figured out how to root the phone, so i was a little nervous. Everything went perfectly. At one point, I typed something incorrectly, but it just caused me to start the process again. With the LG Optimus, I was just able to download Z4Root, and it did the rooting for me. Not sure if that or unrevoked works on the Epic? Considering you have the epic, I would wait for 2.2 to come out since we keep getting told it will come out soon. *fingers crossed for all those epic owners out there*
