It's easy to browse the file system on the computer as a USB drive, or on an Android phone with apps like Astro (or any other file manager for that matter), and perfect if you prefer to manually add or remove media files. That's how I do it, just drag and drop, no need to sync anything. I don't know if you can do this with a jailbroken iPhone as I haven't used one. You can also launch files if you prefer from the file manager itself instead of grabbing them through the specific app, you just have to select an app to open them the first time as you would on a computer.

There are apps (I believe there is at least one free one) that will do read-only for word and excel files.

I'm not sure what you mean by cracked apps, but if you root your phone you have the ability to install a lot of things that you wouldn't be able to use otherwise - WiFi tethering, Overclocking utilities, custom boot screens and graphics, terminal emulators, etc.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
