Is there a way to kill an app without using a task killer?

Is there a way to kill, end or completly stop an app without using a task killer, a task manager, whatever you call it? I mean within the Android os without installing an external app? Thank you.
 
Settings -> Applications -> Running Services

This is it on a HTC Desire, anyway. Shouldn't be much different, if at all, on a different phone.
