Is there a way to turn off background data only?

I have a T-mobile HTC G2 W/Google, I have a 200mb a month limit and come close to that every month. I am about to go over my usage so I turned OFF data, it say's Data Enabled and I unchecked that so I don't go over my usage. Everything i do use I can get with my home Wifi so this is a great solution for me, except I can NOT send or recieve MMS picture messages which I use a lot. Is there a way on my phone to turn OFF background data so not to eat up my data, but be able to access my mms messages as they are sent/recieved? I have seen others can turn off just background data and use it in the forground on demand, but I don't see such an option on my T-mobile HTC, can anyone help? :D

I don't have a G2 but try Settings ---> Accounts & Sync and:

1. Disable background data.
2. Disable auto sync.
