Is there a way to use Google Voice without it taking over my phone?

Is there a way to use Google Voice for Android without it taking OVER the whole phones voice mail system?

I want to use Google Voice as a second phone number I can give out to people I don't want to know my REAL number.

Problem is, when I set it up, it takes over my phones own voice mail which I dont want it to do. I want to have my cell number go to my normal Sprint Voice mail and my GVoice number go to my GVoice voice mail account.

I still want to be notified on my phone in real time that someone is calling etc.

What options do I have? How do I set this up? My friend says I can do what I'm asking but he never seems to have time to show me. I know he uses it too though.

Take a careful 15 minutes searching through your (desktop) GV settings. Google.com/voice Settings>mycellphonenumber>edit>advanced>Set Voicemail access to "no" (at least I think that's what youre looking for)

It seems that what you want is for someone to call GV and it to ring on your phone and nothing more. That should be pretty easy to set up. Make sure your "calls" settings on you phone is pointing to the sprint voicemail and not google.

Go to Settings-Call Settings-Voicemail Service and change it there to "My Carrier".

That's what I do on my N1. I've given my GV number to my coworkers and I have it set to ring both my mobile and home phone so when I'm WFH I can answer on my home phone and not use my mobile minutes.

Google Voice rocks! Hopefully they'll get the voice recognition dialed up a notch though.

Your right..GV rocks and so does Android. I had the first iPhone and I'm glad I did because its what started this whole cell phones craze but I'm glad I'm with Android now and Google!
