Help Is this normal? Or should I exchange my GS3?

Want300

Lurker
I have been having a couple issues with my GS3... I am pretty new to Android and this phone, so I do not know if this is normal or if I should exchange the phone for a new one while I can.

Issues with the Keyboard and Typing:

- Sometimes when using Swipe, the phone will recognize the "path" my fingers traced (showing the animation) but nothing will show up in terms of what I tried to type. Then I will try again, and the same thing will happen one or two more times (most has been 5 times in a row it didn't type anything). Eventually it will work, and the "path" I swiped did not change much at all.

- When using Swipe... It won't know basic words like "got" "box" "your" "good" "food" "yea" "out" "now" "not" "need" and many many others. I must have tried to trace the path for "box" like 10 times. Starting perfectly on "b" moving to "o" then to "x" and it was coming up with "now" (which I couldn't get "now" to work tracing it correctly either) Finally I swiped "cox" (essentially) and finally got "box"

Is this the phone? Or the swipe feature?

I had a GS2 for work for a couple months (did not get a lot of use because I didn't get called that often and I only carried it during work hours)... I cannot remember having any problems like this.

There are some other things that I am not sure if they are normal or not, but I cannot think of them right now. I will post them when I remember (or when it happens again)

Thats just a swype problem, and honestly swype is terrible. I used it when it first came with my droidx and was quickly turned off with updates that made it not recognize common words used in everyday conversation.

I don't know if its on sale anymore but go buy swiftkey (was on sale for 99cents). You will be blown away at the difference in build quality. The app actually understands words a lot better and will also give you 2 other options based on your path travel. It also does an excellent job of switching from swyping to just plain typing.

I figured it was, but since I couldn't remember ever having this issue on the GS2 when I used it (but I didn't use it much)... It made me think it was the phone.

Swiftkey is great, just bought it, but if you really like the swipe gesture, go keyboard allows for both types of input and it free, and customizable. It has a lot of features to play around with also. I like swiftkey for it's accuracy and go keyboard for the functions. Either are better than stock or swype.

Wait...Swiftkey has a swipe to type function, too? I might give it another go.

Shapewriter was, by far, the best swipe to type keyboard I ever used. It doesn't scale to higher res screens, though, due to not being supported for the last two years (peckerheads at Nuance bought it, then shelved it). Only now, on my S3, am I having to use Swype, as Shapewriter is just too small on this screen.

I liked Swiftkey, if a typing keyboard was needed, but I don't like typing. Time to give it another shot, I guess.

If you are talking about the Samsung Keyboard swype, then yes it sucks big time. Try the original swype from swype.com. You'll need to download it from their website thou after registering. I don't have any problems swyping with it. But as the other poster stated, get SwiftKey 3. I use that one now and much faster then swype if you're a two finger typer. You can pretty much type words almost blindy and it can predict what you're trying to type. They have a free trial too if you want to try it first. Also the arrows on the bottom is very handy if you're trying to edit some words or paragraphs.

My apologizes I was thinking of Shapewriter when I mentioned the keyboard/swype. I don't use it anymore for the same reasons I had it installed on my droidx before I got my gsIII.

But regardless its way faster then any keyboard I've ever used.

Damn. Had me going. I always switch to Swiftkey when I need/want to actually peck at the keyboard, but I swipe the vast majority of the time.

I'd pay $20 for Shapewriter if it worked properly on the S3.

SwiftKey doesn't have Swype feature afaik. SwiftKey is a must though, i've never looked back since buying it. And I type epicly fast now. Nearly up to my old blackberry speeds on a touch screen is something im more than happy with.

I just got Swiftkey because of all the great recommendations. There is one thing I can't figure out, though. How do you type the small characters at the tops of the keys? Thanks.

Long-press the key with the symbol that you want.

For instance, if you want to type the "&" symbol, hold down the "D" key for a half-second.

Swiftkey was on sale for $.99 (instead of $3.99) on both Amazon and the Play Store. I don't know how long the sale lasts, and I can't see the present price - but it's worth a look.

Also, you can change the Long-press duration option to a shorter period so it will pop up faster. I find the default time too slow since I type pretty fast. Try it with something like 200ms. Settings are under Settings>Language and input>SwiftKey 3 "GEAR">Advanced>Long-press duration

The "swype" that comes with the phone is garbage. Download the actual swype beta if you haven't. It definitely knows box from now lol.
