Help Is TWRP safe?

Hi, I need to root my phone and unfortunately it's not as simple as it used to, so apparently I need to install something called TWRP I guess. Some people said that it may cause some harm. For instance, I could get no update from now on if I ever install TWRP. But again, I don't know what it is.

I'm using Gm5 Plus (General Mobile) - Android 7.0 - Android One (Stock)

So, can you explain the dangers of TWRP? I know that rooting can be dangerous, I have rooted my older phone but never had a problem. I'm just asking if TWRP is safe. Thanks in advance.

Well actually I don't have to root. But I really got used to the call recording on my older device, and they blocked it. So in order to make it available again, I actually have to root.
Well then if rooting is the reason for not receiving updates, I guess I can trust this TWRP thing - whatever it is. And yeah, I actually have a TWRP for my device. I just figured I should consult you guys before installing it.
If I root, and 7.1 update comes, then I unroot the device, can I update it to 7.1? Of course after the update, I'm going to root again.
Thank you.

Actually installing TWRP will block stock updates, certainly on many models of phone. It's different from the reason you shouldn't apply such updates to a rooted device (which is because the update is a patch designed for an unmodified ROM, and may produce unexpected results when applied to a modified one). It's recovery that actually installs the update, and with many (most? all?) phones TWRP just won't install the update.

Of course there are other ways of applying updates, but unless proven otherwise I'd assume that installing TWRP means that you have to handle software updates yourself in future.

Personally I don't think I'd be happy rooting without a custom recovery. But you should understand what it is before installing it (a good principle generally).

As for can you root, unroot, upgrade, reroot the answer is "in principle". If you unroot completely (return the phone fully to stock, e.g. by reflashing it withe stock firmware) you can certainly update. As for whether you can re-root, as long as the update doesn't prevent that, sure. So if you have an unlocked bootloader and can install a custom recovery you can use that to re-root. If you rely on some rooting app (which I guess not if you are already on 7.1) then it's more likely that an update would remove whatever vulnerability the rooting app uses (which is why those things don't work for recent Android versions anyway). Or, of course, if you have a custom recovery and there is any sort of community for the phone then chances are that there will be a version of the update that you can install from TWRP very quickly, possibly before it becomes officially available to unrooted phones).

Not as many as I used to be able to - my hands have slowed down a little with age. But yeah, I have a slight reputation at work for sending extremely long emails including ASCII diagrams...

If all you need is call recording, an app called Drupe can allow it without root ;)
It's a replacement dialer/contact app. It works on my LG G5 fwiw.
Check your local laws about call recording ;)

It is a good app but it still doesn't record it. It only records my voice. Because recording the other person is restricted by system default unfortunetly. No app (without root) can provide me a call recording feature on this phone.
