I've tried 8 times now to update to 6.0 and I get an error everytime

My phone just refuses to update. I took it into a Metro PCS mother store and the guy just wanted to get me a new phone since he doesn't know why it isn't updating. He did suggest that I delete all my apps and see if that works or a full factory reset. At the very end he says he ordered my new Stylo and then I see that I have to pay $15 plus tax???!! WTF? I am still under the one year warranty so I am not paying any money so I didn't have him order the phone.

My question is, can I somehow update my phone without rooting it? Do you know which apps might be causing the error? I have over a gig of memory on the phone so that's not the problem. I tried LG's official site but no update there. I would rather not factory reset my phone because I don't want to lose all my texts and phone calls. I've tried some apps that are supposed to save it but it comes back all jumbled and doesn't really work. What options can I try before I have to resort to a factory reset? Is Marshmallow even worth the hassle?

No you don't have to root your phone unless you want to . You can just use the new lg up app to install stock marshmello and stop there.

The Next steps are for if you want to root and install a custom recovery.

In my opinion, no it's not. I upgraded one of my two Stylos, there is literally no visual difference between the two systems. Didn't make it run any better, or any worse. No new wallpapers or apps, except maybe new video calling function?

Why do you want to upgrade so badly? Don't believe the hype with Marshmallow on this phone. You're better off staying with Lollipop. But if you really want the upgrade, don't do anything, it will come. Go into system menu and manually check for an update, say late at night. Sometimes that makes it magically appear.

-EDIT-

If you do upgrade, and something goes wrong or breaks, there is no simple back button. You will have to download a few things to your PC and do some surgery on your phone. I also recommend looking in play store for apps that can back up call logs and messaging logs, if you're serious about retaining those things lol.. good luck - Spec

Yeah like Spec2nirvash said, MM upgrade isn't really worth in my opinion.

After you been through all those hassles, you may find there's not much difference. Even yet, many complain it's actually worse due to weak Wifi connection and overheat.

If you really want to update the LGUP program is the easiest way.

I was just hoping 6.0 would fix my GPS problem but it seems like it's not worth the hassle. I feel like SPEC2 didn't even read my OP. I have tried downloading the update OTA when it tells me one is available in the system menu 8 times. I always get an error. I don't think I could have been anymore clearer.

I'll admit I missed the part where you attempted to download it several times, because that was stated in the title, not the in the OP itself. Also, in a last ditch effort to help you rather than verbally scourging you (I'll give you three guesses as to why), I pretended that I never saw the first part of the OP and worked off of the rest.

You certainly could have been more clear. Hmmm, what kind of error were you getting? List of apps you have downloaded that may be interfering with upgrade? You also could've saved us quite a few keystrokes and spared us of all things profoundly stupid silly just by saying "my GPS sucks, will 6.0 fix it?"

LAWL~ I'll be clear about this: YOU and many others got hosed by Metro and LG with the Stylo. But you screwed yourself by not taking a free phone ($15 is the ESN fee Metro charges, you could have cried about that to a corporate CSR, they would've easily credited your bill). You could've had a brand new Stylo with 6.0 and working GPS, fresh out the box. FREE.

But, carry on, perhaps you'll find more answers you don't wanna hear. Have fun!

I did talk to the manager and he said that's the policy and take it or leave it. My GPS doesn't always lock on to my current location unless I reset my phone. It will still have me at my house even if I'm 40 miles away. Sometimes it locks on after being in google maps after 10 mins but most times, I just put in whatever address I am at and go from there. I have a lot of apps so no way I am going to list them here. I don't want to have to go through the process of downloading an app that can transfer all my text messages and apps and call history to my sd card and then have to download that app on the new phone and hope it all works because no app I have found makes that easy. The guy told me LG backup that's on my phone won't work with the replacement LG Stylo since there is a good chance it will already be updated to 6.0. I guess I can call Metro PCS customer service and see what they say about getting a replacement but this seems like a hassle for an update most here say to just skip because it's not really any different.

BTW, I didn't screw myself. My warranty is for like another 9 months so I can get another Stylo if I want. I just think it's ridiculous that I have to pay for something I am still under warranty for. Virgin Mobile would send me a brand new phone in the package for free, no questions asked.

LG just fixed my phone (mine also had GPS problem) and sent me yesterday. Since this was the 2nd time I sent phone to get GPS fixed, I demanded replace or upgrade but instead they just fixed it and sent me. Not sure what they fixed but it seemed like they simply re-flashed the pgms...

So far GPS / Map / Navigation all working but that's what happened when I got the 1st repair. GPS worked for 1 week then went bad. If this goes bad again, I am going to call and strongly demand complete replace instead of temporary fix.

FYI, this is the link I used. They are usually quick to process phone repair.

"I have a lot of apps so no way I am going to list them here."

* You're the one asking for help? We can't guess which apps you have installed...

"I don't want to have to go through the process of downloading an app that can transfer all my text messages and apps and call history to my sd card and then have to download that app on the new phone and hope it all works because no app I have found makes that easy."

* There is no single post fix-all we can provide you that will magically fix your GPS, upgrade you to 6.0 while leaving your call/msg logs intact. Seriously. You have a food stamp LG phone. If you want the magic app that feng shui's the entire contents to a new phone, word is Samsung GS7 has it. Seeing as you are stomping your feet and barking at everybody in protest over a brand new $15 (oh, plus tax) LG Stylo that is upgraded AND has working GPS, I can't see you spending $700 for a new S7. You don't even want to spend any time fixing your phone. I seriously believe any answer we give you just won't be good enough.

* Just...pay...the....$15....already.... Would it help if I said the 15 isn't technically for the phone itself? Probably not.

* .___. I tried to help. Plugging VM here still isn't helping your situation. I'm done lol

OMG seriously? So if I post every single app I have, you will be able to figure out which one is causing a problem? I tried to google a list but nothing comes up. I mentioned VM because an inferior company has better customer service. There is no $15 fee for whatever reason with VM. 100% free. What do you mean food stamp phone? Before I bought it, I checked reviews and most of them were great. I like the phone other than the GPS not always working and the fact I can't upgrade to 6.0 and it also sometimes just turns the screen sideways for no reason. Again, most people ITT and from other comments from other sites say 6.0 is not really noticeable.

"food stamp phone" I think that means you've got a lemon. I'm sure that not all Stylos are duff, but the very occasionally a bad one can get through the system, and you might be entitled to a replacement. If they continue to give you the runaround, may have to seek legal recourse.

I love my Stylo but the GPS is a weakness. Sometimes it's a hardware issue or sometimes it just needs an app to fix.

I used GPS Status Test & Fix app and my GPS works fine now. It isn't 100% accurate (sometimes it will show my house number + 4) but google maps shows accurate directions as well as waze. It does take a long time for the gps to finally lock in when I used the app.

YMMV

If you don't want to factory reset, try clearing the cache partition. Not a guaranteed solution but probably the next best thing without having to Factory reset and reinstall all your apps.

As far as MM, wifi being spotty after the MM update is an issue on many different phones.

Anything particular about the MM update that interests you? Like others have said, if you don't need the new features, it really isn't worth it to upgrade.

I will check out GPS status test and fix. I don't know any of the new MM features. I just know my phone that my phone notifies me that there is an update available but it doesn't want to update. I have already cleared the cache partition after the 4th time it didn't update.
