Jelly Bean with unrooted phone

I read a post last night where you can get Jelly Bean with unrooted phone. I read the directions and downloaded the zip file to my external SD card. It started downloading and I got an error message saying the download was aborted. I have an AT&T SG3, so I decided to try to find another download. I tried it again and the same result. It attempts to download the file, but aborts after a minute or so.

I'm new to the SG3, so maybe I'm missing something. Is there something I need to do to my phone before I can get Jelly Bean?

A guy posted you can do it from your phone. He said you get your phone in recovery mode, choose a couple of options and the update should be there. A few people replied back that it worked, so I must be doing something wrong.

I renamed the file to update.zip, I made a folder and named it root, move the zip file to the root folder, I was told to select the apply update from external storeage. I don't see an option that says reboot to recovery. This is confusing.
 
Let me start over here. I'm still learning this phone, so I'm not familiar with everything yet. I've done nothing with my phone as far as rooting or anything else. It's set up just like it would be out of the box. With that being said, can I get Jelly Bean without doing anything to the phone? If I do have to make some changes, let me know.

the root directory would the the top of the directory structure hierarchy. simply "/".

I think I may do what you're suggesting. These replies make it sound so simple but I can't get it to work for me.
 
all of my updates i've used my computer. I find that is the easiest way.

most of the time, they give you a copy of ODIN to go along with it.

running Android 4.1.1, version DLI8 on international version.

As jeffrj4au said, it needs to be on the root of the SD card, recovery will not look in a folder for it. So just put it on the card without putting it in any folder, like the picture shows, you should see all the folders and then the update.zip file at the end of the folder list.
 
You have to flash the phone back to the correct stock ICS image with Odin3 before you can apply the leaked JB update.

In a few months, this will all make sense, but right now, I have no clue what ya'll are talking about.

Since I've encountered a few issues, I've actually been toying with the idea of taking this phone back and going with the iPhone 5, but I made up my mind today. I'm sticking with the SG3. I'd be giving up too much to go back to the basic iPhone. So maybe in a few months I can help others like some of you have helped me.

I've always been the go to person when it comes to iPhone. I'm looking forward to understanding andriod and Samsung.
 
I could be wrong here but i didnt think there was a way to flash Jelly Bean via recovery unless you are rooted. Neither can you get into the root access of your phone without being rooted.

The best way would be to download the complete .tar.md5 file, put your phone into download mode and flash via Odin

Install ES File Explorer on your phone. You should see a path at the top like the picture posted. Usually the first location it shows at the top is /mnt/sdcard. At the top, select the drop down/path up button until the path at the top simply says /. This is the root folder, as in this is the very most basic point. Similar to how on a PC C:\ is the root folder and then you have other folders inside of c:\. Place the update.zip into this location and reboot into recovery by turning off your phone and then turning it on while holding volume up and home at the same time. This should bring you into the 3e recovery where you can select to run the update.zip. it can sound confusing but with a little patience and some googling you should be OK. Nope, I flashed mine from stock recovery. The thing is you have to Odin the phone back to the correct stock ICS image before you can apply the update or it will fail since it is a patch for a specific version of the stock firmware.

To the OP, sounds like you'd be better off waiting until Jelly Bean is officially released next month. Although if you spend an hour reading on Android Forums & Windows Phone Discussion @ xda-developers you should have no problem getting this done. Beware that the Jelly Bean leaks do have bugs, which is why you might just want to wait for the official release.
