Jelly Bean -- Won't Automatically Connect to Wifi

Hi,

I wondered if anyone could suggest a solution to my annoying problem...

I began noticing a while a back that my Galaxy Nexus is not automatically connecting to my home Wifi any more (assuming mobile data not enabled).

Where it usually displays signal strength, it just displays grey bars, and browsers will tell me I'm not connected to the Internet. Then, if I go into the Wifi settings, with the list of routers in the area, my home router will instantly go to "Authenticating.. Obtaining IP address... Connected!" without me even touching it.

How come I have to go into the settings every time if I want to connect to my home Wifi?

It's not a time-based thing. Once, I spent a whole evening thinking "Wow, I'm seriously not popular tonight", then in the morning, noticed Wifi wasn't actually connected. When I connected it (same steps as above), all the E-mails and stuff finally sync'd up.

I think a recent Android update might've screwed it. I've not modified my Android in any way or have any apps that might screw with this... just chat apps and games really.

If anyone knows I'd be grateful to hear...

Thanks!

I just purchased a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 last week and I noticed that it also will not Auto Connect to known wifi??? I have to manually go into settings and manually connect every time I get home. My Galaxy S3 has no problems. Anyone have a solution??

In advanced settings for wifi, it looks like the check box for "Auto Connect" has been removed in Jelly Bean.

In Jelly Bean, go to menu>settings>Wi-Fi and then tap menu>advanced and tell it to keep wifi on during sleep. This may increase battery use, but you'll stay connected.

I know this is an old thread but it came up in a search.

I'm having this same issue (WiFi not automatically connecting to my home WiFi) but when I looked at my WiFi Advanced settings the "Keep WiFi on during sleep" is set to always.

Anyone know of something else to check?

I'm on Android v4.1.2 which I think is Jelly Bean.

Is this something that just happened? Did anything change on your phone or your network recently?

No. It's been happening for a little while. I just didn't know that it wasn't normal because I came from iPhone not to long ago. Then talking with someone that has had android for a while and he said it wasn't normal and to Google the issue. That is how i came across this thread.

I traded my iPhone in on a used Galaxy S3 earlier this summer but I'm pretty sure I updated it to the 4.1.2 since I got it. That has been a least 2 or 3 months ago.

One thing I have noticed is that whatever is going on it's actually turning off my WiFi in the Settings menu. I have to usually go manually turn that on which in turns makes me log in every time.

I updated my galaxy tab 7 plus to 4.1.2 about two months ago and have not had any wifi issues with my routers at work, home, McDonald's etc so far. Your problem may be device or OS specific so you should check with your particular Nexus sub forum.

Also, there are lots of threads which show that some particular devices do not play well with certain routers. Try taking your nexus and see if it will connect in other wifi spots, eg McD or Starbucks etc. If you are able to connect well in other locations but not at home then the usual remedy is to change your home router to a different one that will play nice with your device

It's possible I might have found the issue. After posting last night I decided to look through my applications and see if I noticed anything. I came across an AT&T Smart Wifi that was already loaded on my phone. I looked at the description of what it did and it talked about turning on/off Wifi when you do/don't need it. I decided to uninstall that app. So far it looks like that might have been it. It's been less than 24hrs so I can't completely tell but normally by now my Wifi would be off. This morning it's still on and I'm still connected like I want. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that was the issue.

I have a phone with version 4.2.2 and there is a power cut and the power returns the WiFi won't work.. It says obtaining IP address and after a while says avoided poor connection.. Please help?

Hi Summi,

Welcome to Android Forums. :)

What make and model phone do you have? It sounds like you have a problem with renegotiating the IP address on wakeup. Try going to settings>Wireless and Networks and tap on Wi-Fi. Then tap menu>advanced and see if "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" is set to always. If not try setting t to always to see if that clears up you problem.

I have had the same issue.
I tried searching for it and found out problem is with location setting.

The following worked for me:
Go to settings/location,
Touch icon on upper right corner,
Then touch SCANNING,
there are 2 options,
1. Turn Wifi scanning On.

Hope this works....
