Jesse Jackson bashing ipad 2 on house floor.

Reduce corporate taxes, that are currently the 2nd highest in the world, and maybe somebody will want to manufacture things here in the US.

This is what happens when you have a moron with zero knowledge of how businesses operate blabbing on the House Floor.

His solution would be to make them in the US and double the price. Which equals zero sales, which equals no jobs.

Wow by going paperless look at how many trees you save, You need a whole heck of a lot less storage of the books in warehouses . The students has to carry less stuff to class. Their rooms are not cluttered with books. I would hope buying of the ebook versions for schools would be less than the printed version. This is the one thing I think make tablets shine.

JR is really stupid at how much this would save the environment from not cutting down trees to make books to just save jobs. Like in any business you need to learn to adapt and over come or get left behind.

Until we can match the cheap labor of ,Taiwan, China and other third world countries. We wont be manufacturing many things like that over here.

Chinese worker lets say he makes $ 4 an hour ( lets be generous) no health, no dental, no retirement benefits nothing. He plugs away making ipads on a like and happy to even have a job.

Now the american worker I want $30 an hour and I want 2 weeks vacation, medical dental. I want paid sick days. He gripes about his job as he plugs away putting ipads together.

Where do you think many businesses want to have their factories at for the most profit. Thats why we dont build many things in the US.

For iPads in schools I'm a bit mixed. I feel K-12 students wouldn't be responsible enough for them, not to mention the distraction they'd bring to the classroom. For college students, sure, they're more responsible and are also already allowed to bring laptops and their own iPads to school anyways.

But forcing anyone that way wouldn't be a good idea. There's a number of people (me included) that prefer to study and read off of paper versus a screen.

I agree with you on the grade school kids not needing them. I know where I live at they want all students to be issued a laptop and the parents would be responsible. I was like BS I wont be responsible for it.

lol copestag

And one can only hope the textbook companies go out of business. They've been changing the binding on the same old books and overcharging for poorly verified material for far too long.

Maybe he wants to hold back progress rather than to adapt. The unemployment figures are more to do with the recession and the current economic climate rather than having things manufactured in other countries. There's more to employment, jobs and prosperity than just making stuff. Let the cheap labour markets mass produce stuff at a price we can afford and we'll do the design, innovation, software and all the other value add stuff. Oh, and we'll make the niche high quality stuff too.

Agreed. How do we change it? Tax the hell out of anything and everything that is produced overseas.

FWIW I think you are a bit overshooting what workers in America would be paid ($30/hr is quite high for assembly).

Certainly prices would skyrocket, but what would that mean? perhaps people wouldn't NEED a brand new cell phone or tablet, or [insert gadget here] every year.

I can speak to that. We manufactured Palm Pilots in Salt Lake City, Utah. We never would consider paying a basic production worker thirty dollars an hour. We also built millions of units cheaper and better here in the United States.

For example, does a person who's only job is to pick up a unit, place it in a ESD bag and apply a sticker really deserve thirty dollars an hour? Did not think so.

Make the regulations that business owners deal with easier and less restrictive, reduce taxes, and we can do it here in this country.

My palm pilots, while now extremely dated, all still work too. I can't really say that for any of the other technology that I own.

I wonder if this would have gotten any attention if he had mention another device besides the ipad.

Yes. Mention any product on the floor or any person for that matter and there will be some measure of fallout.

Had the OP not posted the clip, how many here would have knew about it in the first place? We watch the clip, read the article and become outraged by a big nothing.

Jackson is a forgettable lump worthy of disdain.

I remember when Rush Limbaugh was raked across the congressional coals by Harry Reid. Mr. Reid write a letter and that letter sold on eBay for 2.1 million dollars.

Bob

this is only news because 2 months ago he was on the house floor pushing the Ipad saying that all congressmen should be given one on the taxpayer dollar

So, would you be willing to work for $4 an hour with absolutely no benefits? Yeah, I didn't think so.

I guess he did not get one so now he is bitter?
That's all we need is to give members of congress more toys on the taxpayers dime.

He should address the problem, and the problem is not that the iPad is made in China, it's that we either force these companies to do it in China or we give them incentives to do so.

Take away the easy money and no more Chinese iPad, iPhone, TV set, microwave oven, etc etc.

The fact that he is singling out the iPad and publishers is dumb.
It was destined to happen with the advent of the computer and internet.

In addition to the above. I don't think there is many Americans who would really be wanting to earn less than $2-3 USD an hour, working 12-14 hours a day, 6 days a week, sleeping in a factory dorm, only seeing family once or twice a year, enduring a 2 day standing room only train ride to get home, making iPads, laptops, phones, routers, toys, sneakers, shirts, dresses, etc. This is still preferable to starving and earning almost nothing, slaving in a paddy field.

a) japan does just that to keep american automakers from having any real chance of selling cars in their country. that wont work here because are too dependent/invested in other countries shit. How many things do you own (including an american automobile if you have one) that dont have foreign parts? there are alot of american employed middle men and women that get a paycheck between manufacturing abroad and reaching the consumer. You'd be hurting yourself while they'd just continue to sell to the rest of the world. shut down toyota in america and thousands of american employees, suppliers, transporters ect are going to lose jobs but toyota will still be all over the rest of the world selling lots of toyotas. Not to mention what american based smartphone or TV's are there? the only american electronics I'm aware of are high end audio equipment which is a niche market and I'm sure by now there are some foriegn transiters and internals used.

Certainly prices would skyrocket, but what would that mean? perhaps people wouldn't NEED a brand new cell phone or tablet, or [insert gadget here] every year.

this is exactly how third world countries live. Why **** with my standard of living (or so I think not having been deprived), thats not a good option lol. I dont want 1989 all over again where I'm carrying a ****ing pager lol.

And this thread just show's how devisive politics are. what else could turn an android forum against the thrashing of ipads (you should be pissed your child is gonna HAVE to buy an ipad when you can get a superior laptop for the same price like the $600 dedicated graphics 1.8ghz dual core front facing camera one I'm on now). All politicians pick some irrelevant product/target to bash to hit home their irrelevant point. At the end of the day they make a new business connection and your outside the apple store or an abortion clinic with a picket sign fighting over your irrelevant (to them) cause. Jesse probably got a call from motorola and a free xoom.
