just bought htc desire 526 and cant log in to google

I bought a new phone this morning but can't get google to log in. Everytime I try I get the "unfortunately google play services has stopped message". Tried clearing cache and data from Google Play. Google Play services, and google services framework. Still the same result. Can anyone help?

The 526 was released in July of 2015, so when you say a "New" phone, you mean new to you, but not brand new? First thing I would try is booting into recovery and first clearing the system cache and then performing a factory reset. If that doesn't clear it up, you might have to reflash the factory firmware, but you might also consider returning it to the original owner. It may be why they sold it.

no it is brand new phone right out of the box. im on a prepaid account with Verizon.

Hmmm, it might be an old version of play. I would still try clearing the cache and trying a factory reset from recovery. If that doesn't work then I'd take it right back to Verizon and either have them get it to work or swap it.

Had to download new play services apk. That solved the problem. Just had to google to find the file. Working great now.

Yeah, okay. It might have been a "new" in box phone, but it seems they never touched the installed ROM since it was boxed two years ago. It's like buying a "new" '65 Rambler because it's never been driven and then trying to find leaded gas.

I loved your response. But it was only 40 I guess u get what u pay for. My old one was a moto e 2nd gen and I just kept running out of room. This one seems to be alot more memory and power.
