***Just Got the Droid Eris(((Plz Help me Out)))

Hey everyone, I am a new user. I was searching for some apps online and a lot refered to me to this website, in which it looks outstanding. So first of all, thanks for the oppurtunity to get involved with something this informational!!!

Ok, now for my question. Well, I JUST bought the Droid Eris, and i'm VERY happy with it so far. When searching for apps online, I see alot of buzz of virus's, adware, malware, etc. Now I don't want to download any apps before I get a decent Virus Protection app, or something like that.
Just asking if anyone had any advice or reccomendations dealing with the antivirus software. I read alot on an app called "antivirus" and it seems pretty good, it got 5 stars, BUT people say it KILLS battery big time. Worse come to worse i'll just dl in and take the battery fatigue but anyways if anyone could help me out that'd be awesome, I don't wanna start downloading apps until i have protection! Thanks alot everyone, my name is Mike by the way, it's nice to meet all ya'll!!!!

PS If you have time, maybe throw in a little list of "must-have" apps, LOL but if not, it's all good!! thank you

Never used an antivirus and never had a problem. The first app I'd recommend is Astro, it's a file manager that lets you arrange files and pictures on the phone.

well i jus download antivirus. It just scans new apps that you download in the background real quick and makes sure there is no viruses or anything..

I wouldn't get an antivirus program. Check out this thread on the android developer's forum: Anyone heard of a android virus/trojan yet? - xda-developers

To summarize, if you stick to apps downloaded through the android marketplace, or trusted websites, you're safe. Each app will tell you what services it needs to access on your phone (keeping the screen awake, your internet connection, dialing phone calls) before it is allowed to install. So look at the list, and if it says it needs to something that doesn't make sense, then don't install it.

Yea, I have yet to come across anything of the sort. I would just stay in the market or links that trusted people around here post. As for necessary apps, Handcent SMS is way better then stock sms app imo. Swype, shapewriter, or a few other replacement keyboards are also nice.

I am glad that you like your ERIS but did you know that it is being discontinued?

HTC DROID ERIS and BlackBerry Tour 9630 set for end-of-life with Verizon Boy Genius Report

If I were you I would return and buy a Droid (or HTC Incredible at end of month) where I can expect continued support and app development.

Just because it's reached the end of it's life doesn't mean that new apps aren't going to be developed for it. The Droid and the Eris will both be on Android 2.1 eventually.

You gonna lend him the extra $200 to get the Incredible?

There will always be a better phone on the horizon that will make you want to return your phone.

The Eris is a great phone, and really it's Android that makes it great... and Android isn't going anywhere.

The plus side to a discontinued phone is if you have insurance and break it a year from now, they have to replace it with something equal or better.
