Just started using Facebook

Nope!

Look at it this way.

Would you accept everyone who walks in the front door of Wal-Mart as your friend?
I doubt it.

I look for who they are first. Do I know them personally? if not, then I let them stew a bit until I figure out why they are asking.
then I look at who their friends are? are those in common with me?

if it fails that, I ignore them.

There are hardly 'corporations' on Facebook. The ones that are present on Facebook will have a verified page (A blue icon with correct symbol next to name) if not that it would either be a fake page or a fan page. It is recommended to add friends only (because there's a chance of profile being fake) and place privacy on your activities like 'friends only' or 'friends of friends.'

Okay. Good adivice. I'll start that way. People I know. But what if Google wants to be my friend? A corporation not a person?
Be aware of any friend requests from "corporations" that aren't actually corporations, they're more than likely scammers and spammers. Real verified corporations just don't do that sort of thing.

Oh, one other thing: By default, pictures you add to your account are visible by the world, so if you don't want that, create albums and set privacy to just your friends, and then put the pics in the albums. You can always leave the less-personal ones in the default albums.

Your name, timeline photo and profile photo are public, nothing you can do about that. I roll with an alias. ;)

I also use an alias, and if they bug me about a picture, I have a very nice picture of my avatar's butt I took to send the vet when she had an anal gland problem.
