Just switched from Iphone to S3 (AT&T) - no universal search???

Hey

Just switched from iPhone over to S3. Love the screen!

But what's driving me crazy is there is no universal search!! WTF?

I used to use this on the iphone MANY times a day, to search for songs, apps, contacts, calendar enteries -- all in one place.

Is there an app or widget for this feature?

Thanks!

Miz

If you long press on the Menu button, the universal search will come up.

To choose what will be searched, you then press:

Menu > Settings > Searchable Items. Then check the required options.

This is on my International version. Let us know if it works for AT&T.

when I click on menu \ search, I get google (web search) with all my previous google searches listed below

When I type something it does a google search, it is does not search my device contacts, etc.

I'm not able to change the searchable items either. From google search when I click the menu / settings it just says "google search settings" up top with one item listed, which is "google search"

When I click on "google search" I get 5 options

1) use web history
2) clear on-device search history
3) use my location
4) terms of service
5) open source licenses

Apple is to blame for that. They were granted the patent for universal search (don't know why), and made Samsung as well as some HTC products take the universal search option down to avoid another legal patent dispute.

Well, you need to thank Apple for that. Anyway, try out an app called Aurora Universal Search, it should do the work.

Luckily on the international GS3 the universal search hasn't been removed.

Until the idiots in the US Patent office can figure out how to its job, they need to stop issuing these broad, ridiculous patents.

And Apple, more than any other company, should back off. Apple has copied major features from Android including its Notifications tray. It’s the nature of any tech business. The double standard here is absolutely idiotic.

Sad thing is the only ones really hurt are the consumers.

Edit: try this: To skirt this issue, you can install Google Quick Search Box Update #2 L710VPLG2 - Page 2 - Android Forums at AndroidCentral.com which is available as an .apk on the Android Central Forums (post #41). Other forum members are saying that it works, but as always, proceed at your own risk and discretion?

Yeah my GS3 is on AT&T and is missing the search feature. I can search web but not phone. Oh well they are saying they will resend this feature soon. We will see.

I'm using an app called "Quick Search Widget". It's free from Google Play Store and I have it as a widget on my home screen and it works just like the iOS Spotlight search did.

I'm a bit of an app hog, so it's nice to be able to start typing the app name and have it autocomplete with the app instead of just doing a Google Search.

got the quick search widget, works pretty well actually! Only drawback is that it doesn't seem to search calendar entries

I used to use Gesture Search from Google but haven't in quite a while. Just tried it and it keeps freezing. Hahahahahahaha... sucks.
