Just what does *228 do to your MetroPCS phone ?

One rep said it improves reception in weak areas. How does one know when to do this "update roaming list " and can it hurt the phone ?

No it wouldn't hurt the phone at all.
Updating a PRL (Preferred Roaming List) is actually good. It gives better signal..might even give you 3G.. etc.
i.e i have prl 3020. stuck on 1X. Damn! i need to update to prl 3027 now. So i dial *228 and press 5 or say Preferred Roaming Lists and then it says to reboot your phone after that. So i reboot, and suddenly.. 3G!
