K-Mart Selling Augen

This is quite the odd combination that seems to have come straight from the depths of nowhere. Augen – a company I’ve never even heard of until today – is looking to offer their Android-based tablet for K-Mart shoppers later on this week. The device – being dubbed the GenTouch78 – *has a 7-inch capacitive [...]

I don't know, it could work. I mean Vizio became the No.1 or 2 selling HDTV brand in the US by selling cheap in Costco/Walmart. Maybe Kmart is just a start, and they'll show up in other stores.

This looks awesome, i'm gonna look for one at my kmart tomorrow.

If anyone gets their hands on one let us know!

has anyone been able to find specs? I'm wicked excited to try this out... tho I KNOW it's gonna be crap. I just hope it's not 800x480 at that size... but why would I expect higher quality at $150? :)

Anyhoo, I'll snag one of these as soon as it can be found and report back.

For that price, it doesn't seem all that bad. Hopefully it's not an arm11 based cpu, if it is then I hope they optimized 2.1 for it. Samsung did a terrible job on it with the Moment.

So what's the Android based tablet to buy right now then? Are there forums where people are making ROMs for them like the mobile phones? Would be cool to get something with v2.2 to enable multi-touch everywhere and a few other things performance related.

I dont think there are alot of choices right now(besides the Dell Streak?). I just bought an iPad (used for a good price) because I was tired of waiting for a good Andorid tablet to come out.

I would have bought this to get me by until a better Android tablet came around... like a 10" capacitive. I read that this is a resistive screen.

When I buy a tablet I would want it to be a better device then my phone or atleast equal. Otherwise why not just use my phone ?

Looks pretty cool for $150 thou , just not for me

as more and more apps come about in the android market, and more free wifi spots become available, why not? only thing is, with current hardware, it might not go further than 2.2.

Checked my local Kmart, but no dice. They had the eReader by the same company, but no tablet. :(

I want a tablet that is a completely different experience than what I can get on a phone or PC

Imagine if you could put live wallpapers on the walls. Imagine if you could manipulate widgets/windows around the space just like they were pictures. 3D icons that you could move around like chess pieces. OK let's see what google can come up with

Well I got one yesterday and it is horrible.
I am hoping their support can help me get the screen a bit more responsive.
I mean I have to press on it like I'm trying to push through it.
The manual says there supposed to be a calibrations but there isn't.
The manual says there is an option to allow this to orientate according tot he direction held but theres not.
The manual says that when you charge the device the light should be red in color turning green when fully charged well I charged over night and its still red.
When I turn it on it says 100% battery...

Also I went into market which is like that on my Droid1, Incredible, Droidx... and chose to install a app like dropbox, weatherbug, MyMemo, SlingPlayer and it sis there saying downloading but its not.
I have my wifi connected to the device...

Anyone else with ideas???
I so wanted this to be a iPad alternative!!!
Thanks

I'm waiting for a real Android Tablet , the ones you see for under $200 just really dont' have the specs to be a quality tablet. But you get what you pay for, would have been great if it was a bargain performance tablet

I'm tempted to spend $100 more than this Kmart deal and get one of the 10.2" options that seem to have better specs than this one on paper at least. The concern of neither of them working very well is the real issue.

Do you have a link or a name I can google for the one you are talking about?

The only thing stopping me from getting it is that it has a resistive touch screen instead of a capacitive one. That's a game killer for a touch screen device these days. I'd say it's still worth the $150 though, I can't believe they can sell it for that.

This is posted on the Augen website:

Patch for GENTOUCH78 Tablet (available 1700EST)

Dear Augen Customers (GEN Nation),

Thank you for showing your support and interest in our GENTOUCH78 Tablet. We became aware of the technical difficulties over the past 24 hours, and we will be posting an update for a patch to the software at the following link: AUGEN ELECTRONICS CORP - Kayako SupportSuite Help Desk Software under latest download files within the next 48 hours.

Just to mention a few technical difficulties we have found and are patching are:

the memory size of 284mb not being shown as 2GB will be corrected as this is a glitch in the software.

Android Market place not being able to download apps will be fixed in this patch, as this is a glitch in the software. As of right now the operating system and pre-loaded applications are using .5 Gb so the available space displayed should be approximately 1.5GB.

To solve the issue with the headphone jack being too small for a 3.5 mm headphone connection, we ask you to send us an email to support@augenus.com with your Name, Adress, eMail Adress along with a proof of purchase. We will be sending you at our expense the 2.5 mm headphones to go along with the unit within 15-20 days. All future products that will be manufactured will have the new patch and a 2.5mm earbud to go along with the unit.

We want to make it a great experience for our customers. We apologize for disappointing some of you, and we are doing our best to make it a great experience at Augen.

Thank you for your support,

Daniel Gofman

Vice President

Augen Electronics Corp.

Is this a joke?
When I called I was informed that a patch was going to be released addressing the lack of screen sensitivity.
Orientation option nowhere to be found even though its says its supposed to be a option in the manual
Same with Calibration WHERE??? not where it says its supposed to be according to the manual.
And the market not downloading squat.

I thought this was a nice purchase but I guess I was wrong.
I will wait to speak to support on Monday before I return this third world device.

I picked one up this afternoon to play around with. I'm with n0m0n on lack of screen sensitivity. Its pretty bad. It also thinks its a phone, ie showing phone bars and edge network. Noticed a hdmi port covered over also. Perhaps a option on a future model.

This could be interesting if they get a few bugs worked out and could be modded. I will play around with it more tomorrow.

If a tablet has almost features as pictures, it's so cool.
