Is it possible to configure K9 to show number of unread msgs on its icon, like stock mail app and social hub?

Not on stock launchers, no. You could always use ADW notifications and GO notifications, and their respective launchers, to get that red number on the upper right corner of the icon showing you how many unread mails you have.
