Kakao abroad HELP!!!

Hey all, I am going abroad very soon. I would like to know if I can use WhatsApp to avoid the .50 cent texts. Also, My relative has an iPhone and will be abroad in another country. If we wanted to chat, can we use WhatsApp on a wifi connection, and not be charged? As long as it is on wifi, our chat should be free right?

If I cant get WhatsApp working, what are other alternatives? PingChat? I need something both android and iphone

EDIT 0 Read last post. Ill be using kakao

I'm in Hong Kong. I whatsapp with people in Japan, Korea, Canada, and the USA all the time. As long as you have a data service (you can buy pre-paid SIM cards in Asia that have data service) then you can get on whatsapp.

Take a look at Kakao Talk if you want an alternative. Available both for iPhone and Android.

Thanks! we will be using wifi though so we do not get data roaming charges, We have to turn off data roaming.

Also, my WhatsApp doesn't connect. Any Ideas why?

thanks!! Also, when i activate whatsapp, do i activate it here in the US or should I wait until I get over abroad to put that country code in.

Whatever number the OTHER user has in their phone book, is what will determine if your name shows up on whatsapp. So if you register it in North America, then your friend needs to have that number in their phone book if they're abroad.

If you're not connected to a data service (3G/HSPDA/4G/Wifi/etc...) Service, then it won't connect to the whatsapp servers. If you do have data service (you can check by browsing around with your browser) then you'll probably have to contact whatsapp about it. I can't help you too much with that.

And if you disable data for roaming, it works fine still when you get some place and just turn on your wifi. All the messages will just pop up then.

Thanks! I think I am going to use Kakao because I actually got the confirmation code for it! It is also free on wifi. Thank you all!

So... If I am in america per se, I activate my phone as United Staes then my number. If i have someone going abroad tomorrow, and i want to activate the app now, Do I put United States as the country code or The European country code?

Phone 1 - Registered number 1 (say USA)

Phone 2 - Registered number 2 (say USA again)

then Phone 1 needs to enter into their phone book, Phone 2's registered number (say USA)

and Phone 2 needs to enter into their phone book, Phone 1's registered number (USA as well)

If you want to get it done before the person leaves, then you'll need to do it now using the American number. The program needs a phone number to verify with and will send an SMS. If not, then the person leaving needs to do it when they get to their destination.

*IF* that happens then scenario 2.

Phone 1 waits until Phone 2 arrives in European country.

Phone 2 registers a European phone number, gets online via wifi, but with the new European number and registers by them self on whatsapp or kakao talk.

Phone 1 enters Phone 2's new registered number (European number)

Phone 2 still enters Phone 1's registered number (USA)

Both situations, you just need to add the other person's number. If you're confused, just add both numbers in first until you see the other person. You might get a duplicate entry if the person registered twice.
