Keeping rooted phone secure and healthy

In the past I have used phones namely Micromax A110Q, Lenovo A700 and Redmi-4A. I rooted all of them and used to install xposed framework and apps taken from sources outside play-store. The places from where those apps were installed were torrents, app sharing forums. I didn’t use any random website hosting apk files. All these phones slowed down within 12 – 17 months of purchase. I never clicked suspicious looking links. However, on every phone I have encountered the notorious stubborn web popups saying “your phone is slow or infected with virus, blah blah.” I always used to close those popups. I had Adaway installed on all phones to block ads.

Redmi-4A got slowed down during last two months. I purchaed it in April 2017 . It was just rooted, had xposed framework installed. I never installed any custom ROMs on it unlike on my other phones. All my old android phones that I mentioned never went to service centre as I never faced any hardware issue.

Couple of days back, I bought OnePlus 5T and rooted it. I also installed xposed framework on it. Compared to my older phones, it’s an expensive purchase and I intend to use it for at least three years without any hassle.

What precautions I can take so that my OnePlus 5T stays secure?

Why do you assume that any slowing down you experienced was a result of any security lapse or dodgy apps, as opposed to just accumulation of junk? In other words, nothing that wouldn't have happened if you'd not rooted. And have you tried cleaning them out (cache wipes, or even a factory reset)?

The best security app is your behaviour: be careful where you install apps from, be careful what apps you install (e.g. avoid anything that wants permissions that are unrelated to its function - though knowing what is needed can take some thought and understanding), block ads, that type of thing.
