Keyboard Suggestion Problem

Lurker
My problem is that when I tap on one of the suggested words, the cursor stays put after the inserted word, but when I type another letter it will become part of a new word.

For example, it will suggest 'walk' to me, but I needed 'walking'. So I type 'ing', but I without hitting the spacebar I get 'walk ing'.

Is there any way of fixing this?

To my knowledge this isn't possible in the Google keyboard, after a word is selected from the autocomplete list, the next letter will be considered a new word... It's annoying... I have learned to make sure the word is unique, such as enter "walki" to get walking then select it. For the most part I actually find using swipe typing much faster.

Ok well I have seen people talking about how to change the settings on other phones, but that could be other keyboards. I would be willing to code one myself but I don't know much about Android or swapping out the default code with my own or with an open source one. Do you know how I could replace Gboard with something else.
