Help Keyboard takes 20-30 seconds to appear?

I just got a Nexus One, which I like a *lot* (reformed iPhone user here). The only thing I can't stand is that the keyboard often takes as long as 30 seconds to appear when I touch the text entry field to reply to a text. Has anyone else experienced this? Any guidance/suggestions?

I can tell you it's not normal.

Have you had it working OK and then installed an app and seen it slow down?

Otherwise:

Pull battery.

Factory reset...
 
No definitely not normal, factory reset the phone to see if that cures it.

Remove any task killers you may have installed as well.

I would obviously prefer not to hard-reset the phone, but if there's a chance that this will solve the problem, I'll do it.

Quick related question about backup. I know that my contact and calendar data is automatically backed up. I have heard that my applications and user data either are backed up or can be. Can anyone point me towards details on this?

apps are not backed up. But, you can go into the market, and a list of the apps you have downloaded will be there, so you can re-download them. App data is not backed up by default, and AFAIK, there is no easy way to back it up...maybe there is a 3rd party app?

I use Astro file manager to back up my apps, but prefer to re-download them if I do a factory reset. If I restore from my backups, then the market doesn't notify me of upgrades.

someone who just recieved their N1 back from a swop stated when they got their new N1 all their apps and stuff came back from google sync
