Keypad inactive during call

I have seen this problem mentioned on other forums, but couldn't find a reference to it here. Please post a link if I missed it.

I just got my S3 today (Yay) and am in the process of setting things up. I have discovered that when I'm on a call that requires a number inputted like a password, etc. The keypad does not function. It was going to black screen, but I fixed that by turning off the proximity sensor. I can program in my voicemail password, so that isn't an issue, but if I want to press "7" to mark a message read, it doesn't work.

Is there a setting I'm missing?

The S3 detects when your phone isn't on your ear and will light up so you can click on keyboard to proceed

That's the issue, when I try that, the keypad is disabled, I can press a key, but the number is not "sent", it does not register on the receiving end of the call. Hard to explain :)
