I can see that, from previous posts, many Galaxy Ace users like myself are never going to be able to connect to Kies. I agree with a lot of replies that, for the majority of tasks, it's not necessary.

If I can't connect, however, is there another way to receive firmware updates for the 'phone?

yup..through OTA
setting>about phone>sftwre update>update
 
Thanks for this reply. I checked Settings>about phone but I don't have an entry for software update. Does this only appear if an update is available?
