Help Kitkat broke my N7. Very frequent reboots, NO WiFi.

The tablet in question is a stock, locked, unrooted 2012 Nexus 7.
On turn on I get "Google" then continuous tiddily winks.
if I press power, vol up and vol down together, I get to the unlock page and it will open and run normally, except I am unable to turn on wifi. No matter what I do I cannot get wifi to turn on. It says Turning Wi-Fi on
 
That's a bit drastic as a first action...

I'd suggest first clearing system cache, then if that doesn't help do a factory reset.

Both actions can be done from the stock recovery menu; this is the sequence needed to clear the cache which will not harm user data:

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up and the Volume Down and Power keys at the same time for about 10 seconds.
  • An image of an Android lying on its back will appear.
  • Press the Volume Down key twice until "Recovery mode" appears on the screen.
  • Press the Power key to restart in "Recovery mode."
  • An image of an Android with a red triangle will appear.
  • While holding down the Power key, tap the Volume Up key.
  • The Android System Recovery screen will appear. Release all keys.
  • Use the Volume keys to scroll to wipe data cache partition and press the Power key to select.
  • The phone will restart.

If a factory reset is need the sequence is much the same, but select the factory reset option from the menu. User data will be destroyed in this case so don't do it unless you really have to.

If all else fails then.... you can always reflash the rom as suggested :-)
 
Tried clearing the cache as suggested. No luck.
So I went ahead with the factory reset. It starts the setup wizzard at US English then changes to WiFi setup and hangs there.

I guess refreshing the ROM is next?

Should I go back to 4.3 or say "what the hell" and go for 4.4?

I've seen something about 4.4.1. What's up with that.

Maybe I should just ask Santa for a N-10!:)
 
Sounds like it. I'd go for 4.4, which works fine on my N7. 4.4.1 is dead in the water, it was replaced by 4.4.2 which fixed numerous 4.4.1 bugs.

Whichever you flash it will eventually offer an OTA update to the latest version so you may as well flash the latest anyway to save the potential grief of another failed OTA.
