kitkat, third party sms apps, mms while connected to wifi

the way I understand it, android 4.4 blocks the ability for third party sms apps to send MMS messages while the phone is connected to wifi. I am a big fan of Handcent, because the stock sms app is atrocious.

if I set the stock sms app as the default, and send a picture over MMS while connected to wifi, I can see the 4G icon pop up in the notification bar next to the wifi icon.

when I initially got my galaxy s5, and tried to use Handcent to send an MMS while connected to wifi, the 4G icon would not appear, and Handcent would just fail to send the message. I found a workaround in t-mobile's support forums, where basically you create a new APN which is an exact clone of the default apn, except for two settings, and use that new APN.

Solution to Picture/Group MMS on WiFi | T-Mobile Support

"solution to picture/group MMS on wifi"

APN protocol - "IPv4/IPv6 " <---------------- changed from IPv6
APN roaming protocol - " IPv4/IPv6 " <-------- changed changed from IPv4

and this worked great for about two weeks: while connected to wifi, the 4G icon would appear next to the wifi icon, and the message would be sent, just like with the stock sms app.

but then, of course, Handcent released an "updated" version that turns off wifi every time I sent or received an MMS. which is clunky and often crashes and leaves my wifi off. I also use a third party corporate email app which can be sensitive to frequent network disconnections. it also prevents me from using things like IFTTT or tasker "do XXX when I connect to wifi network YYY" if i'm disconnecting and reconnecting to wifi 50 times a day during a conversation of group messages (aka MMS messages).

I've reached out to Handcent repeatedly asking give me an option to not turn off wifi, since I have a working workaround, but they don't seem interested.

has anybody else run into this, and if so, have you found a third-party sms app that doesn't disable wifi?

I've spent the last 30 minutes testing google hangouts for sms/mms, and when I receive an MMS, it disables wifi, turns on 4g, and leaves wifi disabled. top notch, google.
