Help Kodi Menu Population "working..." for too long (Android tv box)

Mark Ka

Lurker
I am currently using a fresh Kodi build on my T95Z box and have experienced speed problems (not internet, but that too) when populating menu selections.

I have tried all sorts of stuff I found online like disabling metadata on the add-ons I am using and clearing the cache with different tools, clearing packages, messing around with the developer settings and can't seem to get the menus to run as quickly as I see on videos.

I would think it would run quickly seeing as it has pretty good specs (I think) compared to other boxes. (https://www.amazon.ca/LuckyOne-Octa-core-Marshmallow-Bluetooth-Streaming/dp/B01N024SRO)

I wonder if it is just the box or there is something throttling the speed.

I also have trouble with buffering with a power-line Ethernet connection, but that's not my main concern as that can be handled with messing with the cache settings if I need to.

Any ideas on how to speed up the overall navigating experience?

Thanks

If it's your ISP throttling or censoring whatever sites and services. Are you in the UK or Ireland perchance? Many of the "add-ons" for these cheapo boxes are usually illegal pirated stuff.

From Canada. That sounds like it could be the case. The solutions would be either trying different menus with different addons to see if some are faster (not being throttled) or start a fresh build with hopefully no sketch addons?

I thought I read that the image and list population happens internally and doesn't require an internet connection - is that true?

(I do have a Chinese manufactured box, that came without Kodi - had to install it manually)

Thanks

Who's your ISP, Rogers? Which from what I've read is a virtually a monopoly in Canada, and apparently does throttle the speeds of things they don't like, even reports of Skype not working very well with Rogers. Could try what I do here in China with its heavily censored Internet, use a VPN.

I use Shaw as my ISP.

I have purevpn running in the background in the box connected to fastest connection available.

I'll try some other connections and see if it changes anything.

Every addon in Kodi seems to be performing slowly - does the isp throttle everything or just the individual addons/sites it doesn't like? I tried CNET addon - didn't load. Tried Netflix - ran smoothly, but isn't part of Kodi.

UPDATE: Looks like it is going a whole lot faster with a connection coming from the US instead of Canada through the VPN, I'll update if it is consistent. Thanks for the help so far.

So the menu population is still fairly slow, but it has been running better since the Connection switch. Still takes a good 6-12 seconds of "working.." to populate lists.

Your ISP bro? I did notice that connection from US and UK worked a lot faster than the one in Canada. Also, it could also be that the box is consuming resources or that some of the heavy-on-resource add-ons are consuming too much of your memory. In case 1, I tried using ivacy vpn to see how a connection to US works and it did better than canada. also, in case 2, ridding some add-ons did speed things up...nothing too dramatic though
