Kooky people do kooky things...

I'm still SMH about this. I can't imagine what it's like to live in a dictatorship anyway, and when you're also subject to a dictator who's also off his nut (and not just drunk with power, which is bad enough)...

Now, the people of North Korea are changing their clocks to mark the 70th anniversary of their liberation from—as the state news agency put it—the “wicked Japanese imperialists.” Instead of jumping an hour to another recognized time zone, though, North Korea is just setting its clocks back half an hour...

Nepal is off by -15 minutes. China has one timezone, when it's large enough to have five, and doesn't observe Daylight Saving Time (DST)

OK.... any other world news?

BTW “wicked Japanese imperialists.” ....yeh, there's a lot of bitterness in this country about that as well, and does influence about how I go about my business here.

Yeah. World financial community with exports at stake pissed off at China devaluation of the yuan, others pissed off it drove the US dollar up, Russia pissed off at Reddit and threatening to block it, National Gallery workers in London are pissed off and on strike, Apple still pissed off about bendgate, toady releases proof that the new one won't, and a bunch of other pissed off stuff.

so.. in that area...

North and South Korea .. now have different TIMES? by only 3o minutes?
those crazy Koreans! what will they do next?

They'd lightened up on historical stuff within a few days.

The Dukes of Hazzard was 35 years ago.

That's that happens occasionally...something happens and suddenly everyone has to be politically correct.

Anyway.. I think this conversation might be heading towards P&CA

A friend of mine got caught by the 30 minute Indian timezone the other year. We were in northern India, in a city with no mobile coverage (because they'd turned off all roaming in a security alert), but during the night his phone picked up a signal from Pakistan and reset its time zone. As he was using this as an alarm clock it had unfortunate consequences...

Actually by the standards of these things the North Korean change is almost rational. It serves no useful purpose, but it is genuinely returning to the timezone that Korea used to use before the Japanese changed it in 1912, so you could regard that as similar to Indian cities returning to pre-colonial names. What undermines that slightly is that apparently the Korean empire only actually adopted UTC+8.5 4 years before that, so it's not as if it was exactly a well-established standard...

so.. now the North Korean have a magical cure for many diseases..

they should have their own special time zone
