Laptop Notebook advice

I will be purchasing a Mobile device after a long a time .(in 2 days)

I am pretty much sold on ASUS laptops
Free DOS .No Windows . :D
So one of them has Quad core AMD A6 APU
another one has Intel i3 -HM 67.

How are Asus laptops build wise ?

Which one should I go for guys :) .
 
As nice as that AMD quad core sounds it is a battery hog. The i3 would be the better way to go. Asus are very good laptops in terms of build, at least, the ones I have seen in person.
 
The specs are mouth watering :D
i3 370 M with Intel GMA vs AMD A6 with HD6650 .
However in the money saved with the i3 ,i can upgrade to 6/8 GB RAM.
I thought Multi-core CPU's have lower battery consumption
Technically both have 35 W TDP .
 
The best way to increase speed in virtually any laptop is a faster hard drive. Most cases, 4GB RAM is enough, really depends on your needs so I can't say. However, most laptops come with 5400rpm spinners and that is the main bottleneck. I mentioned before I have a AMD C-50 which is only dual-core 1.0GHz in a 11" laptop. Boot time was about 50secs with the Toshiba spinner, I bought an Intel 3rd gen SSD, boot time is 18secs. Only 2GB RAM and for what I do seems to be working out. :)
 
i3? Pretty weak. Depends what you are using it for I guess. If you are just surfing the net, emailing, work stuff thats fine. If you are doing bigger things like HD video work, graphics and photos, will need something much better.
 
Now whats the difference between i3 and i5 series technically and the effect on the battery .
Now I am super confused with lot of options . Head is spinning with options .
i3 performance is quite satisfactory in my opinion .
Also the difference between and i3 2nd generation and i5 first generation

Haha :rolleyes: .You say that all over the Computers and IT forum :D:D:D .

The problem is SSDs are exorbitantly priced currently in my part of world . Even importing it is out of question currently .The SSD market has not opened up .:(
For the price of one 160GB SSD I could get a AMD C-50 based Laptop/Netbook and 8GB RAM + 1TB external HDD.

So I am waiting for the market to open up to buy an SSD .I can live with 40 second boot time and the performance bottleneck which comes with HDDs. :)

I actually wanted to upgrade my desktop but decided for a mobile device since I am spending much time on Linux .
 
You don't have to get a SSD ;) A 7200rpm drive such as the WD Black series is currently the fastest spinner out there, a 500GB version is only $80 CDN. They come in 320 and 750GB sizes as well. I'd get an i3 based laptop and the above HDD.

It's roughly 500$ +/- 150$ .I plan on some programming ,and some CPU intensive tasks . Occasionally I will uses VM's . I will be running Linux Mint primarily .
 
The i3 is fast enough, you already have the 7200rpm drive included, how much memory? At boot Mint 11 uses about 400-500MB so if you have 4GB RAM that is more than likely enough. If you are going to run 3 or more VMs at the same time, then get more RAM.
