latitude question

i like latitude and it's fun to see where friends are.
what's the deal with how often it updates?
it seems random and weird.
is there any way to force it to update a friends location?

The friends that I have that use it seem to have their status updated whenever they move. I think if the phone moves, then the status gets updated.

I do have some friends that use it on the iphone, but since the they have to actually open google maps to have their status updated, it is sometimes days at a time between updates for them.
