Learning to root

Hi all I recently bought a Mytouch 3g and would like to learn the basics of rooting (may or may not root it but want to learn and understand it just in case I do choose to root). I understand that it can help speed up your phone (mytouch is in need of a speed up) and I like the fact that learning some of the coding can help open up the potential of the phone. So basically after searching and reading around these forums, are there any resources that help introduce noobs like myself to ins and outs of rooting the mytouch and is there a way to practice/test the methods in like a simulator or some sort?

Ok so I found this guide to rooting but it seems it tailored more towards the g1:

My question is what would I need to do differently for this to work on the mytouch, and what button combos would I need to use throughout the steps as these given combos are for the g1.

I am going to use cyanogens 1 click method (I think its called this) from

Root T-Mobile G1, myTouch 3G - Android Phone Hacking Guide

I have a few questions:

The first is how do I get this process to work on my 1.6 system I.E. how to I downgrade my build to crc1?

Secondly how do I unroot it for warranty reasons?

Any help is appreciated as I have not found suitable answers to my questions via searching this forum or google.

This is frustrating every website/set of instructions I find are badly out of date what are the most up to date and easy to follow instructions out right now? Seriously I'd love to know cause I just don't feel comfortable following something that came out in August.
