Help Level 1 Messages

Our office just switched to android devices from blackberries and a lot of my colleagues want to know if there is any way to create notifications similar to Blackberry Level 1 alerts. We use the Microsoft Exchange Server Email and would like to have messages from specific people and message with specific keywords have a distinct ringtone.

Is this possible in the OS and if not is there an app that can do this?

Thanks!

It's easy to give contacts their own ringtone. But AFAIK there is no way to set a ringtone by keywords in an email subject or body.

Offhand, the only workaround for this I can think of is to have the messages with keywords you want recognized come from a special common sender (contact) then a special tone could be set for that sender's contact. Or have several special contacts corresponding to certain keywords. For example for the keywords 'Today's schedule' have those emails sent from a contact named Schedule. For 'Service request' have those sent from a contact 'Service'.

Maybe someone will chime in with a solution I'm not aware of.

Depending on your Android OS version, you may be able to use an app called PrioritySMS:
If you've ever missed an important message then Priority SMS is for you! Specify keywords and/or contacts and Priority SMS will trigger an alarm when a new message arrives containing the keyword. Set the keyword to "emergency" to set off an alarm whenever "emergency" is in the message, or create a secret code to give to your family and close friends. If you're on call, configure Priority SMS to alarm for any message from dispatch. Whether your phone is in the other room, or if you're sleeping, or whatever the reason may be... you can be sure that Priority SMS won't rest until you're notified of urgent messages.
Priority SMS is also able to alarm after you have missed a call. If your family calls you overnight and you miss the call, Priority SMS can make sure you wake up.

I can't vouch for it personally, but it is open-source which is nice. :)
