Help LG E-430 Can I stop auto updates?

I use very few of the apps on my E430 but every time I connect to wi-fi I get various apps starting to update. Can I stop this? Also since I don't use and am never likely to use some of these apps, how do I delete/remove them?

You can disable apps through the settings menu which should prevent those apps updating, however, to remove them you would need to root the phone

Thanks for that, I'll give it a try. Root the phone, that's way beyond my level of competance as a smart phone user of only a few weeks.
Another thing though, what are widgets for and can they be deleted?

You can't delete widgets as such but any on your home screen can be removed. Widgets can be removed from your home screen by long pressing the widget and dragging it to the top, or bottom (depending on your launcher) until it turns red, and then letting go of it.
