Wonder if lg g5 is the “newest” phone with removable battery and I will have to restrict myself to LG devices if I want a phone that still leaves itself open next year.

"leaves itself open..." ????? Not sure what you mean by that, but the LG V20 is due to come out real soon:)
It has a removable battery.
