Would you like it to be delivered by pixie or unicorn? I'm afraid that ship has decisively sailed as far as this class of device goes.

Yes that is a thing in the past that made sense then. Now waterproof and dust proof seems to make more (sense?) profit.

It's an argument that's been rehashed many times. The biggest benefit of a fixed battery is that you can fit a larger capacity battery in the same size device. It also allows you to eliminate all of those complaints about flimsy-feeling creaking backs that were a feature of every Samsung review for years (or "give the device a premium feel" as the marketing people would put it). The drawback is of course that you can't swap the battery without surgery.

In fact sealed units were already the norm at the high end before Ingress Protection became a thing for anyone other than Sony, and many sealed devices don't have IP ratings still, so I'd say that isn't the driver. Of course Ingress protection is simpler with a sealed unit, but it is possible to combine that with a removeable back.
