LG Optimus L9 vs/or LG Spirit 4G

I've looked at other threads talking about this subject, but I just want to be clear on this question I have. Will the Spirit continue to work after 2015? I'm trying to help my uncle buy a new phone, and I would like to know which one everyone else would pick. I want this to be a phone he can use for at least 2 years. I like the Spirit, imo it's a better phone. He won't notice the difference between the operating systems. Project butter is great, but I have JB on a couple of my device's, and I can't really tell the fluidity apart from my Motion running ICS vs my HD2 running JB. I have Google now on both. Aside from being able to update GN, it works pretty good on the Motion.
The price of the L9 is nice, but it being a Gsm phone that's getting Hspa+, I'm worried he won't get the great service the cdma Lte Spirit has. I had Tmo for a long time, and the service started to decline so, I went with Metro. So how is the service with the Gsm Metro phones? Does the signal have good penetration in buildings? (Especially buildings with a metal roof!) He also wants to be able to tether for Netflix. He watches it a lot, and will be using a chrome cast to stream to his TV. He is always on the road so being able to tether is something he likes, and needs. I heard with the Gsm Metro phones tethering is being blocked? I'm not sure. Well, let me know what you guys think. ;)

both very capable phones, on the cellular side, I think the spirit has better reception, data side, L9 will knock it's teeth out if you're in a good coverage area.
