LG Optimus V 2.3?

I would like to know if the LG Optimus V will be upgraded to Gingerbread in the near future. I've heard from some people it will, others say Virgin Mobile has canceled the release. But, I can't find any real information on any of these statements. Also, is 2.3 really all that much better than 2.2? Because my cousin said 2.3 is only minor improvements (except battery life) and that there's 2.2 phones that blow 2.3 phones out of the water.
